...it's Saint Patrick's Day! Happy Saint Patrick's Day everybody!

* A Doctor Who game is being developed for the Wii (Link swiped from [livejournal.com profile] popfiend)

* SyFy has lost their marbles because they're going to add some reality shows to their line-up, among other things (Link swiped from [livejournal.com profile] popfiend)

* I've had Jonathon Coulton's "Re: Your Brains" stuck in my head all day today.

* So...I have a pint of Guinness sitting on my kitchen counter. I'm not going to drink it though. I'm using it for the Irish fondue on Sunday. Then, someone else is going to drink the rest of it. I don't like the taste of most beers.

Yeah...I got a little carried away with pictures this week. Also, for someone who doesn't like the snow or the cold, I certainly take a lot of pictures out in the snow and cold. What can I say? At least it's pretty.

Yeah...I've been neglecting my LJ nowadays, haven't I? Lately, everything that's happened to me can either be summed up in 140 characters on Twitter or talked about in a weekly picture-a-day post...

Having said that, onto the pictures...

Weekend

Wow...is it Sunday night already? I had a pretty good time this weekend. On Saturday, [livejournal.com profile] doomsey and I went with his family to see "Rock 'N Roll" by Tom Stoppard The play itself was okay, but I didn't like it as much as the one we saw last week. I did, on the other hand, enjoy the music. After the play, we went to Reza's downtown. I think that's one of my favorite places to go to after the plays. They have a good selection, and the food is always delicious. I know this must sound boring, but every time I go there, I usually end up ordering zetsche polo-- a rice dish with saffron and currants-- on the side. Very yummy!

Today, [livejournal.com profile] doomsey and I visited [livejournal.com profile] forestdruid's mom to pick up some tomato seedlings she had for us. We also got a quick tour of her garden, which is beautiful. She's put a lot of time into it. For awhile now, [livejournal.com profile] doomsey and I have been considering buying a tree for a part of our yard that used to have a shed on it when the previous owners owned the house. Said section has always looked somewhat barren. After talking with [livejournal.com profile] forestdruid's mom, I think [livejournal.com profile] doomsey and I decided that we would plant a Japanese maple there. I've always thought they were beautiful trees.

In the afternoon, [livejournal.com profile] doomsey and I celebrated Mother's Day at my parents' house. We left in the late afternoon, and met up with [livejournal.com profile] doomsey's parents for dessert. Afterward, we watched the last episode of Dollhouse. I thought it was amazing, and I hope that they pick it up for a second season. [livejournal.com profile] doomsey, however, is more pessimistic about the show's chances than I am. It'd be a real shame if they canceled it. It always seems like the television studios cancel the shows that are intelligently written...

And it looks like I've been neglecting my dragons again. Please click on them so they don't croak!

Yep...I'm late on this one. I had a lot of pictures to go through from [livejournal.com profile] doomsey and my trip to the zoo on Friday.

I meant to post this story last week, but I forgot. My brother-in-law is very silly. During the Saint Patrick's Day dinner last weekend, my parents had the History Channel on, and they were airing a show about how extra-terrestrials might have influenced human architecture and civilization. Some of the "experts" they interviewed for the show were real loons. Anyhow, my brother-in-law told my two-year old niece that George Washington wore so much make up to hide his green skin. He also said that Alexander Hamilton got into a duel and had one of his antennas shot off. My mom told him to stop because they're going to get concerned phone calls from said niece's teachers once she does go to school. I'm thinking it won't be a problem though because the teachers will know that her father is a clown.

Now, it's story time. Let's say that, in some alternate universe, aliens did influence human history. What wacky scenarios can you come up with? I'm going to say that the Mayan civilization disappeared because of a zombie outbreak. It was caused by a virus that aliens inadvertently spread to humans when they visited our planet for the first time. Also, Einstein was was sent to Earth to help advance human civilization with his theories on mass energy equivalence and relativity. He has a third eye hidden on the back of his head under all that hair. Charles Darwin was a Cthulu-like alien. His big beard really wasn't a beard, but a hologram. They were really tentacles. And, of course I had to take this last shot. Sarah Palin isn't human: she's an evil Cylon. Her next mission is to take out Tina Fey, gosh darn it, because she cruelly mocked her during the American elections. There's also another model of her in Joe the Plumber's head. She told him what to say during his visit to Israel. To this day, she is still in his mind having a torrid love affair with him all while continuing to manipulate him for her own ends.

I had a nice couple of nights. On New Year's Eve, [livejournal.com profile] doomsey and I went to a friend's house where we spent much of the evening playing rock band. I did a lot of singing and I'm surprised that my voice held up the entire evening with all of the screaming I was doing. Yesterday, we went to the in-laws' house to eat the traditional dinner of pork with sauerkraut. Yummy! Also, [livejournal.com profile] almeda gave me crochet lessons. Many thanks! We also played Apples to Apples. I managed to win the green card, secretive, by making a Fargo reference. I played the noun, wood chippers. Heh! That still does not compare to the time I played the noun, Helen Keller, for the card, touchy feely. Yes, I am evil!

Anyhoo, this is my list of New Year's resolutions:
1) Exercise more (and maybe lose a few pounds)
2) Stay healthy in general
3) Learn to crochet (already started!) and continue knitting
4) Write more
5) Try to figure out some of my great-grandmother's recipes

Today, [livejournal.com profile] doomsey and I went to the Art Institute. They had a really cool exhibit on tapestries that is ending on January 4th. We also visited the Impressionist Art wing, which was closed when we visited back in July. Right now, [livejournal.com profile] doomsey is doctoring a pasta sauce. The smells coming out of the kitchen are delightful!

[livejournal.com profile] doomsey got a knife sharpener today as a Hanukkah gift. He must like it because he is in his office sharpening knives as we speak. Hmmm...come to think of it...I have been kind of obnoxious lately. I hope he's not planning to do me in in my sleep. *thinks of the shower scene in Psycho* :)

I got two books from [livejournal.com profile] emygination for Hanukkah this year: Roald Dahl's Book of Ghost Stories and Neil Gaiman's Coraline. Yep, I definitely like all things macabre. I must be easy to please because books, movies, and knitting gear are definitely my favorite presents.

Let's see. What else did I do today? This morning, I got a call from [livejournal.com profile] judgys saying that [livejournal.com profile] almeda and husband were in the hospital because of food poisoning. Their dogs had not been let out since last night, and they needed someone to check on them. [livejournal.com profile] doomsey and I jumped in the shower and ran to the hospital downtown to pick up a key from them. Then, we headed to their house and let the dogs out. They were obviously tying it in a knot when we got there, but surprisingly, they hadn't made a mess in their cage. Obviously, they made a beeline for the back door. Afterwards, we gave them food and then made sure their water bottle was refilled.

Afterwards, we had the Hanukkah party at [livejournal.com profile] judygs' house. They had lots of roast beast and potato latkes. Mmmm...I just *love* potato latkes. You know, [livejournal.com profile] doomsey and I really need to make those sometime. They are awesome.

That's it for me. I am so tired, it's not funny. Off to bed with me!

Holidays

The last few days have been enjoyable. On Christmas Eve, we had dinner at [livejournal.com profile] forestdruid's mother's house. As always, the food was delicious. Christmas Day was at my parents' house. My dad dressed up as Santa Claus and gave presents to my nieces. This year, Emma did not cry in Santa Claus' lap. Initially, she was afraid of him, but once she saw that she was getting presents, she was as happy as a clam. My parents also think that she might have suspected that Santa was her grandfather, so we're going to start changing around who plays the role. It looks like I'll be playing Santa next year. Tee hee! Sounds like fun. :)

I also got a lot of nice presents this year. My parents got me Charmed Knits, which is a book of knitting patterns for Harry Potter fans. I also got two classic Doctor Who DVDs: "The Hand of Fear" and "The Invasion of Time." My sister got me a cute kitty cat t-shirt.

Oh...I also brought the stuff that I baked earlier this week. The fudge was such a hit that it disappeared before dessert. Yeah...we have a lot of chocoloholics in the family. I kind of felt bad for bringing it though because my dad ate a couple of pieces. He really shouldn't be doing that because his blood sugar has been high. I did bring him some angel food cake and strawberries sweetened with Splenda for him to eat so that he wasn't eating all kinds of sugared stuff.

Also, I inherited my great-grandmother's cookbook. (Said great-grandmother came to America from Germany. She lived in a tenement not far from UIC when my dad was a kid. Allegedly, her coffee cakes were legendary). Originally, [livejournal.com profile] doomsey and I were going to scan it and give it back to my folks, but my dad can't eat sugared stuff anymore. [livejournal.com profile] doomsey and I put it in a safe place, and hopefully, we're going to start scanning some of the recipes soon. I would love to see if I can resurrect some of her coffee cake recipes. I just have to keep in mind that a) cups back then were six ounces and not eight and b) eggs were smaller then. Either I'm going to have to find regular eggs or I'm just going to have to monkey with the recipe and use less egg.

We left my parents' house in the early afternoon and headed over to see [livejournal.com profile] doomsey's folks. There, we had spice cake and watched Die Hard 3. My mother-in-law gave us our Christmas present yesterday. It was a new cushion for our papasan, which annoyed [livejournal.com profile] doomsey because, according to him, there was nothing wrong with the one that we had. ([livejournal.com profile] doomsey has been a curmudgeon this year because he keeps complaining about getting Christmas presents. He claims that he doesn't want more "stuff"). I don't think it's that big of a deal. I'm sure we can freecycle the old cushion.

Anyhow, we're celebrating Hannukah tomorrow with [livejournal.com profile] doomsey's family, so there should be even more festivities. I think [livejournal.com profile] almeda is also going to teach me how to crochet.
