A Picture a Day -- Week 37
Sorry if some of this is incoherent. I seem to have caught
emygination's cold...
Monday, September 7th:

This is a lladro that my husband bought me one year for my birthday. This was after he accidentally knocked a shelf down and and broke some of my figurines. He also put a chip in a lladro cat I had brought back from Spain and a Belleek cat that my mother's cousin had bought for me when she was in Ireland-- said cousin passed away several years before so this last piece had a lot of sentimental value. I think he felt bad about doing it. I was okay with it as long as they were not broken outright. Anyhow, I think this particular lladro was no longer being produced, so
doomsey found one on Ebay that was in good condition.
Tuesday, September 8th:

My ash tree is starting to change colors. It's going to be absolutely gorgeous in a couple of weeks. The entire tree will turn a pretty shade of yellow before losing all of its leaves.
My maple tree, however, won't drop all of its leaves until late November or early December, usually after the last free leaf collection day. This has happened to us two years in a row, and it's kind of a pain in the ass. Last year, it had started to snow before the maple finished dropping its leaves. Eventually,
doomsey went out there with a gas lawnmower and managed to mow the rest of it into the ground. I thought it was kind of weird because there was still patches of snow out there, but whatever works I guess. In the past, we've put leaves dropped after the last leaf collection in our flower beds as mulch.
Wednesday, September 9th:

Our pine trees in back have woodpecker holes in them. This is because they're either infested with termites or carpenter ants. Whatever they are, the woodpeckers love them.
Anyhow,
forestdruid told us that he thought they were termites, but
doomsey seems to think they were carpenter ants. One of the neighbors in back of us had to take down a sick tree that had become infested with carpenter ants. Said tree was a maple and had a sizable limb fall while their kids were playing slip and slide in another yard. Fortunately, nobody was hurt. It did scare the crap out of them though. We've also seen a lot of carpenter ants around. Every year, we have to spray so that they don't come in the house.
So...I guess this means that we're going to have to find a spray to kill them. Any ideas what we should get? I know I have to pour something around the ash tree to protect it from ash borers. Am I going to have to get something similar for the pines?
Thursday, September 10th:
A Murder Invesigation:
Exhibit A:

Exhibit B:

Confession:
After we had Terminix come out and spray the wasps living in one of the walls of our garage, some of survivors decided to rebuild their nest by our kitchen window. So...instead of having them make a pest of themselves when we were headed out to our cars, they were making a pest of themselves as we were coming in / leaving the house. Instead of calling Terminix and having them come out during the day, I decided to do the job myself. I got one of those bee and wasp pesticides that can spray from 15 feet away, waited until night, and then sprayed the shit out of the nest. I went back out there in the morning and saw that the nest was indeed toast. I still haven't knocked the nest down though. I should probably take a hose to it soon before they try to rebuild it.
Friday, September 11th:

On Friday morning, I had work. After work, I booked it back home, and then
doomsey and I drove out to Latrobe, Pennsylvania for his aunt's memorial. It was an eight and a half hour drive, which was exhausting after having worked that morning. Notice I didn't take any pictures along the way. Just a picture of our hotel room. I was so tired.
Saturday, September 12th:

A stained glass window in St. Vincent's Church in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. I was told that St. Vincent's was the first Benedictine Church built in the United States. It's a very beautiful basilica. It also has a small liberal arts college on the grounds.
Sunday, September 13th:

Saturday after the memorial, family members went to Aunt Dot's apartment and started clearing furniture, pictures, books, and other items out of it.
doomsey and I brought home some books, a couple of cups, a shawl, and this rocking chair. When we got home on Sunday night, we put the rocking chair in our guest room.
Also, I found out that
doomsey's aunt never threw anything away: including things such as birth certificates, death certificates, baptismal certificates, etc. She had also done quite a bit of research on the family tree. Some of these papers were a gold mine for
doomsey's family.
Okay...time for a nap.
