Honestly...it would depend on when the movie was made. As much as I love animals...I understand that any movie containing animal actors made before the 1960's probably had some animal death associated with it. I like classic westerns. They went through horses like socks on some sets. The protections just weren't there.

Today...special effects and safeguards make that sort of animal death minimal. Since I couldn't find a citation on when the movie was filmed...I couldn't tell you. In a modern film...it would be inexcusable.

Though...films that show the slaughter or death of commonly consumed animals...can usually get around SPCA rules if the animal is killed in a manner consistant with humane slaughter. I remember an episode of CSI getting a lot of razzing because they used actual carcasses for a slaughterhouse scene.
