Shoes

Since one of my goals is to get out and do some more walking when the weather gets a little nicer, I'm thinking about getting some new shoes. The L.L. Beans don't seem to be cutting it for me. [livejournal.com profile] doomsey swears by them, but I've had two pairs now, and both of them give me nasty blisters on the back of my foot when I walk more than a mile. My questions are: What do you wear? Do you have a nice pair of walking shoes that are working out for you? If so, where did you get them from?

I love keens and new balance. new balance is best for walking. keens are better for off roading ie. hiking or something to that extent.

My parents swear by Merrills (Bass Pro Shops, REI, DIocks, etc.). They run around $100. I am thinkin g about buying a pair for myself, but what I have been doing is Nikes from Nordstrom Rack. I spend $30-60 per pair at Nordstrom Rack, then fir them with a pair of Dr. Scholls arch support insets. Those last me about 4-6 months before they start looking too dumpy for work/fom coming out of the inside - usual wear and tear, but keep in mind I walk 2 miles/day in them 5 days/week.

Not sure on the shoes, I'm in need for a good pair or two myself - my last pair of what I THOUGHT were good walking shoes had the heel supports totally collapse and fall apart on me in the span of a couple of weeks of working in the pharmacy!

BTW, if I remember correctly, you're not all that far away from me. If you're ever looking for someone to go walking with, maybe we could set something up. It SUCKS walking alone and I don't always trust my neighbors/cars around me and tune out the environment with my iPod (not all the streets in my neighborhood have sidewalks). I'd probably get out and walk a whole lot more if I had people to walk with. :)

I wear New Balance. They're one of the only women's athletic shoes that comes in wide widths. I like the 485 model and have had like...three or four pairs of them over the years. They're a nice shoe. Sometimes I can find them at Sears or Famous for around $30.

I also wear Merrells. I've walked all day in them multiple days in a row with no problems.

Greg has told me that if you go to the New Balance store they fit your foot very specifically. I also had a really good fitting at REI.

Personally, I have a pair of Nikes... they tend to fit a narrower foot, I only wear them as running errand type shoes. My workout shoes are are a pair of Asics. I had my foot specially fit by someone at a store in Iowa, so that's not terribly helpful.

That's a good idea. I probably should get fitted. And while they're doing that, I can bring up the fact that I keep getting blisters and what I need to do in order to avoid them...

Doc Martens

Doc Martens worked really well for me when I was working downtown and walked to/from the train station every day. They're heavy though.

Another solution for the fitting problem is to go with Zappos or the competitor of theirs whose name escapes me at the moment. They have free two-way shipping, so you can order a few size increments, and return the ones that don't fit.
