Disclaimer: Blog Like Its the End of the World Day

Disclaimer: This is Blog Like its the End of the World Day. All of what I'm posting is fictional. Do not freak out!

Our next-door neighbors, Adam, and I are being bundled into one of the humvees. One of the soldiers is even helping me with the cats. That’s awesome! I thought they were going to make me leave them behind.

Man…is it dark outside. What happened to the sun?

I’m looking over the expressway and I see that part of the city is on fire. It looks like something out of The Stand. No one is out on the streets, except for the soldiers and the unliving dead. There are burning cars, dead bodies, and trash all over the roads.

Update 1: Corporal Smith just handed me a revolver. They’re short on men and I look relatively “with it.” His words, not mine. Adam, on the other hand, is certifiable at this point.

Update 2: Mike is teaching me how to shoot the revolver. There’s nothing to it really. You just pull back the hammer and squeeze the trigger (gently!). Watch out for the kickback! To reload, you flip the cylinder out and put the bullets in. Piece of cake! He’s also telling me to aim for the head because that’s the only thing that seems to be taking them out for good. By the way, don’t aim directly for the head. Aim a tad bit lower and you’re good to go.

Update 3: Ha ha! I bagged one! And from a moving car to boot! Am I good or am I good? Heh heh. I could get used to this.

Update 4: Now I see why he handed me the gun. There’s so many of them and the army's desperate. We just ran over a line of zombies not two minutes ago.

Update 5: We’re pulling into the refugee camp. We’re passing the checkpoint now. It’s in Villa Park off of St. Charles Road. If you’re in the western suburbs, try to head there.

See what I said about keeping your head, Adam? Speaking of Adam, he’s in shock. They’re whisking him off to a triage of sorts.

Soldiers are keeping the zombies at bay using rapid-fire machine guns. *Rat-tat-tat-tat-tat!*

*Whooooosh. Boom! * Sounds like they’re bombing now too.

Update 6: I think I’ve just volunteered to join the Army. They’re so short on manpower that they’ll take anyone…even short, somewhat out of shape women on blood thinners. It really is bad out there, isn’t it? Stay safe, folks!

Update 7: My neighbors have graciously offered to take care of my cats. I’m so thankful. I’m starting to suspect that they’re the only “family” I have left.

Update 8: I can has rapid-fire machine gun. I’ve named it Alice. Corporal Smith is teaching me how to use it. I also get to keep the revolver. Tee hee!

Update 9: Good news! My brother-in-law is alive! He’s currently roaming in a humvee with some of his old Army buddies. He loves zombie movies so, aside from worrying about his family and loved ones, he’s probably having the time of his life. My sister and niece are also safe. They are in another camp in Roselle. No word on [livejournal.com profile] doomsey, his family, or my folks.

Update 10: The US military is estimating the world population has been halved in a matter of hours. I’m speechless.

Update 11: [livejournal.com profile] doomsey just called me. He’s alright! His co-workers are fine too. They’re holed up somewhere in Hillside. *does the happy dance* I told you they’d do it!

Idiot…thanks for waiting so long to tell me you’re alright. *punches*

He’s a little concerned that I’m playing with guns though. I haven’t shot myself in the foot yet, dooms! Honest! Okay, well, I *almost* shot myself in the foot re-loading the revolver for the first time by myself. But I’m okay! Good to go!

Update 12: I’ve made a new friend, Sandy. She’s showing me the ropes. (This is really baptism by fire!) She’s been in the army for five years now. Cool!

Update 13: Sandy: (stares at my t-shirt). Me: Why yes I like The Ramones.

Update 14: A camp in Round Lake just got over-run. Things are not going well. A couple of camps in the city are also pretty tenuous.

Update 15: We’re still pulling civilians out of houses. As time goes by, we’re recovering fewer and fewer. :(

Meta: It's been a *long* time since I've written a story. It feels great! I should really do more of this.

For those people on my friend's list, thanks for putting up with me. :)

That was so much fun! God, you're good at this.

Thanks.

Honestly, I haven't done anything this complex for at least five years. I've been lamenting this lately. I thought it was a shame because, back then, I started writing a children's book, and some of the people I showed it to were really impressed...except for [livejournal.com profile] doomsey...he's my toughest critic.

One of the things I've considered is using LJ to start telling stories. I've recently started an account called [livejournal.com profile] lady_brigid. I'm probably going to change the name to Lady Bree or something. I also have several pages of notes put together for the story I want to tell. (I've had a lot of ideas over the past year or two, but I'm stupid and I didn't write them down). It's all a matter of motivating myself to sit down and do it.

By the way, taking something outlandish and writing it down as if it were real is a style called Magic Realism. It's one of my favorite styles actually. I think that's part of what got me into trouble *cough cough* earlier this morning with one of my friends. I started from the everyday or the mundane (my vegetable garden, my trip to the hardware store, talking about my recent illness...things I usually talk about every day because that's what I know best) and then gradually made it more and more absurd.

That, and I figured that a zombie invasion would start out that way. A couple of isolated incidents here and there...some random attacks...nobody knowing exactly what was going on...and then boom! Crisis!

Fun stuff. I should do this next year.

Is there a pattern to picking the day? Is it a Friday the 13th thing? Or was Halloween involved once? I forget. If it's not on my {football|basketball|baseball} schedule I'm kinda hopeless at keeping things straight...

You know. I'm not sure.

Okay...I looked it up in my archive and they had it June 13th last year too. I don't think it's a Friday the 13th thing per se. It's just something they do on that day. Actually, this was the second year they ran it. I hope they do it again next year, but this time with a different theme. One of my friends told me that they should do an alien invasion...
