Ugh! I think I'm coming down with [livejournal.com profile] doomsey's cold. My throat itches and I have some congestion. Hopefully, I won't get as sick as [livejournal.com profile] doomsey did. He's *still* sniffling and wandering around the house looking miserable since he got sick on Sunday. Yesterday and the day before, I tried to fend his germies off with Airborne, which is a little tablet that you drop in water and drink. The downside is that it tastes like crap. This morning, I decided to give up on the Airborne and use Zicam. The Zicam has always worked well for me anyway.

...as long as you're ok with permanently losing your sense of smell. ;)

Dan recommended that I use the Zicam actually. He said that the people who tended to lose their sense of smell did stupid things like use it every day.

From what I've heard, it isn't people who've necessarily used it improperly, but it seems to be people who use the nasal spray and nasal gel. The zinc can damage the olfactory nerves if it comes into contact with them.

Cool-Eeze does pretty much the same thing as the Zicam.

That would only happen if you/she used the Zicam spray or squirt up your nose. If the dissolvable tablets are used, the sense of smell is still in tact.

"The mechanism responsible for these alterations in smell function is quite clear. Zicam is a zinc containing drug. While zinc is critical for maintenance of normal smell function through its action as a cofactor in carbonic anhydrase VI, given directly into the nostrils at high concentrations, it can initiate direct toxic destruction of the olfactory epithelium with which it comes into contact in."

So basically, you will feel a burning sensation which is fromt he spray destroying your smell receptors. It doesn't happen to everyone.
