You're evaluating a character on Lost as "kind of weird." Seeing what else this show presents us with (and I have only seen the third season finale and season 4, which means I'm both ahead of and behind you), Desmond strikes me as downright normal, even compared to the more likeable characters like Hurley.
(BTW, now that I know that you're not on season 4 yet, I'm glad I grabbed the Ben userpic instead of the Desmond one—it's got a spoiler on it.)
