Well...she could have told him that her knee wouldn't be a problem for her in a hundred years. That way, she wouldn't scare the kid, yet she wouldn't be lying either. Telling any little kid, especially an over-sensitive one, that his mother is going to die, isn't the brightest thing to do. If possible, you should wait until their a little bit older.
