Compact florescent lights -- and, I should add, florescent lights in general -- all have a bit of mercury in them. It's not a whole lot, but you need it - it's what generates the UV light that the phosphors convert to visible light. You can make a florescent light without mercury, but they're called neon lights and end up coming in all sorts of funky colors that are a lot less useful for room lighting!
