This is an amusing website about monsters and other interesting creatures from Japanese folklore. I make you a bet that a few of these have made their way into anime and us Westerners haven't picked up on it.

I remember that there was a reference to this one in Azumanga Daioh.

For whatever reason, this website is reminding me of the anime, Mushishi and some of the superstitions mentioned in the first complete Japanese novel, The Tale of Genji.
