Today, my in-laws had to put their nine-year-old dog, Rico, to sleep. A little over a month ago, they removed a mass from his spleen. Lab results indicated that it was hemangiosarcoma, which is a blood cancer. There really wasn't much they could do to treat it. Eventually, he would get a tumor elsewhere that would rupture and bleed. This was fatal and, supposedly, very painful. I was told that he was okay yesterday, but when he woke up this morning, he was acting very sluggish. He was panting a lot and he was very unsteady on his feet. His stomach was also swollen, which meant that a tumor had ruptured overnight. The poor guy.
This morning,
judygs called and told us so that we had a chance to say good-bye to him before she took him to the vet. He was a real sweetheart. I'm going to miss him.
