A Day Like Any Other

Remember that post I wrote back in February wishing it was late spring, early summer? How I wanted to enjoy warm, summer breezes and wake up hearing the birds singing up the sun? At the same time, I dreamt of being healthy again and going for two or three mile walks like I was able to do last spring before everything went to hell. I was so scared back then after the embolism that almost took my life and terrified that my next CT scan would show that I had lymphoma. If only I could be healthy again. If only the weather would be warm, and I could dance and play outside again. Please let me hang on until then…
Well, it seems like I’ve been getting my wish these past few weeks. After a cool spring, it’s finally gotten warm again. On Tuesday, I went for a walk and the weather was absolutely beautiful. It wasn’t too hot and it wasn’t too cold. The sky was a breath-taking shade of blue, punctuated with the occasional cotton-ball cloud. And there I was, looking up at the sky and being thankful that I was still alive to enjoy it all.
Not only that, but my health has been much better. I’m back to walking two to three miles a day just like old times. On a good day, I can go as far as four or five. It’s been a long time since I felt this fit, this happy.
Okay…that’s enough of me being a sap. Back to planet earth. This morning, I’m going to run to the hardware store to pick up some ant traps. While I was weeding the garden yesterday, I noticed that it had an anthill somewhere by the eggplants. The ants have been crawling back and forth all over the garden. My next-door neighbor, who told me earlier that he is a gardening nerd, was out and about. I told him about my ant problem, and I asked him if it would be possible to spray or not. He said that you can spray up until the plants start getting flowers. After that, you run the risk of poisoning the vegetables, and eventually, yourself. Since my plants are already starting to flower, spraying is not an option. The solution is to buy these little green outdoor ant traps and stake them into the ground. Oh…he also mentioned that only the little, red ants are a problem. The black ants eat the aphids-- which also prey on vegetables-- and they’re very useful to have around. Since I seem to have both, I’m going to go ahead and get the traps. The good news is that the traps only kill the harmful red ones and not the black ones, so it couldn’t hurt.
