10. We Were the Mulvaneys by Joyce Carol Oates -- I bought this book several years ago from a sale at a local library. It looks like it's been read a lot because, wow, is it falling apart. Sections of the book kept falling out of it as I was reading it. It's been sitting on my shelf for awhile, and recently, doomsey picked it up and read it while he was traveling out of town. He said that it was pretty good so I decided to give it a read. It's very very sad. We Were the Mulvaneys tells the story of a seemingly happy family living in rural New York. Then, after a dance in 1976, the daughter gets drunk at a party and is raped. The father, whose pride is wounded, turns into a drama queen, takes up drinking, and expels his daughter from the family. Over the next few years, the Mulvaney family falls apart.
