A Very Bad Idea
Aug. 15th, 2008 04:08 pmArm the teachers. Just great. This is what's really going to go down:
"If you (get out of your seat / interrupt me / talk to your friend / throw things) ONE MORE TIME, I'm going to SHOOT you!"

Date: 2008-08-17 04:48 pm (UTC)Anyone that has a TX state permit already understands that "... ONE MORE TIME I'm going to SHOOT you" (the mere threat) is a felony.
None of this is responsible behavior, and it's vanishingly rare amongst the legally armed crowd. The process of getting a permit forces you to understand these things. You don't even draw unless you are willing to shoot. And the only cause to shoot is to counter an immediate threat of death or grave injury. The only reason I don't carry on campus is I can't get a permit in California.
As for shooting a kid, anyone who walks into a classroom, a gym, or out onto a field pointing a weapon at anyone there is a threat to be stopped, period. (If they survive to go to trial, fantastic. If not, c'est la vie.) Those of us who would carry, these are the decisions we make ahead of time about what we're willing to do, and what we're willing to accept. I'd rather shoot a 15-year old boy, then talk to lawyers and shrinks, and fuss over "what went wrong?", "what did we miss about him?" than have to bury some kid with a bright future who was in the wrong place at the wrong time, doing exactly what they're supposed to be doing. Especially if I know in my heart I could have done something to stop it.
That's a tough choice, and not everyone can make it. That's okay, we're all different personalities.

Date: 2008-08-15 10:41 pm (UTC)We were all pretty much of the opinion that none of us were sure we could actually shoot a kid if it were necessary. Beat him down with a shoe? Absolutely. Shoot him? Not so much.
