Monday, January 19th:

The weather on Monday wasn't quite as frigid as what it was last week (it went up into the thirties!) so I went for a walk through my neighborhood. I took a bunch of pictures, but for some reason, I was amused by this sign.

Tuesday, January 20th:

Barack Obama was inaugurated as the 44th president of the United States. In honor of the occasion, I decided to take a picture of the yard sign I had bought up in Wisconsin during one of my canvassing trips.

Wednesday, January 21st:

This is a picture of the chocolate bread I had made the night before.

Thursday, January 22nd:

On Tuesday, I managed to lose one of the gloves from this pair, and I was starting to think it was gone for good because I couldn't find it anywhere. This would have made the second pair of gloves this winter that I could I no longer wear because I had lost its mate. The kicker was I had just bought that pair of gloves on Monday. Fortunately, I found it in a blanket that was on my couch.

Friday, January 23rd:

I made peach kuchen on Friday. I doctored this recipe by adding more sugar and cinnamon into the batter because I didn't think it was sweet enough and my dad had said that my great-grandmother's kuchen used to be sweet. The recipe I used wasn't written into her book. It was an old newspaper or magazine clipping she had placed inside it. Anyhow, I kept adding in sugar and cinnamon and tasting the batter until I liked it. I must have done something right because my dad said it reminded him of his grandmother's baking. Yay! My mother later pointed out that she might have clipped the recipe and then modified it for her apple kuchen, which was handwritten into her recipe book. Next time I'm either going to attempt her coffee cake recipe or her bread pudding one.

Oh...I also brought the remaining peach kuchen to the party at [livejournal.com profile] voidness' house on Saturday evening. It was quickly demolished. :)

Saturday, January 24th:

This is what happens when you practice drunken photography. On Saturday, [livejournal.com profile] doomsey and I went to three parties: my niece's second birthday, a party at my best friend's house, and [livejournal.com profile] voidness' party. At the latter party, we were Bush no longer being in office. Said party was also the first time in over a year that I was able to get myself nice and schnookered because I was no longer on the rat poison Coumadin. I had a lot of fun on Saturday, but I discovered that I didn't have as much tolerance for alcohol as what I used to. (It also didn't help that [livejournal.com profile] doomsey was actually encouraging me to get plastered). I woke up with a nasty headache on Sunday morning. Tee hee! At least I enjoyed myself. Things are almost always much more hilarious once you've had a few to many.

Sunday, January 25th:

On Friday, I went shopping for a sifter because my great-grandmother's recipe called for sifted flour. I had tried looking for a sifter in late December, but I had no luck. I swear that stores don't carry sifters anymore. When I had first made the peach kuchen, I had to make do with a ladle that one uses to strain grease from soup. It did the job, but it took forever. I finally managed to track down a squeeze-sifter at Bed, Bath, & Beyond. (They have all kinds of useful kitchen gadgets there). During my wanderings, I came across a rolling pin. My great-grandmother's recipe book had some cookie recipes, so I figured it would be nice to have one should I decide to make some. Also, like shovels and baseball bats, rolling pins are great to have on hand for home defense in case of zombie attack. On the other hand, contrary to the old angry wife stereotype, they should not be used for clocking your spouse upside the head.

Adopt one today!

You never know when a rolling pin may come in "handy". And I'm glad you said what the - chocolate bread - was, I wasn't too sure......... can I have some?

you can use a wire strainer for a shifter.. I hate those handheld ones they are a pain in the ass

The shifters that are hand-cranked work just fine thank you. The squeeze ones are for the birds -- your hand gets tired in two seconds.

Funny thing is that AB likes the squeeze kind, not the crank kind.
