Monday, July 13th:

I planted lily bulbs in the empty space near my garage this spring, and they have finally blossomed. The package contained a mix of two different types of lilies. The other ones have grown a bit, but not much. They also don't show any signs of blossoming anytime soon. [livejournal.com profile] doomsey also seems to think that we could probably put more bulbs there next spring since that space is still looking somewhat empty. Originally, I didn't buy more because I didn't want to put the plants too close together.

Tuesday, July 14th:

Tomatoes! Tomatoes are good, but there's nothing like having fresh tomatoes straight out of the garden in late summer. That reminds me...I have to put more Shake Away out there so the rabbits and squirrels don't get at them.

Wednesday, July 15th:

A friend that I hadn't seen in a few years came to visit the Friday before, and she brought flowers. They were still holding up well on Wednesday, so I decided to snap a picture of one of them.

Thursday, July 16th:

This is the start of my ripple blanket. The pattern calls for three colors: cream, light blue, and dark blue. I'll post a picture with all three colors for my picture of the day next week. Hopefully, I'm doing this right, and it's not going to come out crooked like the blanket my mom attempted to crochet a couple of years ago.

Friday, July 17th:

Another lily from my backyard. Hopefully, these guys are not going to get trampled when the tree removal place comes to take the fallen tree out of my backyard.

Saturday, July 18th:

I taught my friend, Carrie, how to knit. This was the finished product. I taught her both knit stitch and purl stitch. She told me on Saturday that she was going to pick up some knitting needles and yarn from Hobby Lobby and practice some more. She also told me that there are a lot of women who sit and knit on the train. One of them likes to give lessons and help out those who are stuck / having problems with the pattern.

Speaking of knitting, I really need to start a stitch 'n bitch one of these days. I know many people who would like to learn. And apparently, I don't suck at teaching it.

Sunday, July 19th:

Yeah...that's kind of a problem, isn't it? [livejournal.com profile] doomsey and I think that it got knocked down in a rain storm the week before. We didn't notice it until Sunday because it's one of the trees in the way back. It's hidden by two other pines and some smaller trees. I called a tree service place today, and they did an estimate. $175 to cut the tree down and haul it away. That's not bad. We were expecting them to be more expensive. The company also appears to be pretty reputable. They've got some good ratings on Angie's List.

Isn't it supposed to be July, not June?

Oh hey! I wrote the wrong month down. Should be fixed now.

Very pretty!

I think people might be willing to take care of the tree for free or nearly so in return for getting it as firewood. At least that is what they do here.

We talked about having someone from my husband's work take away the tree for firewood if the power company or the phone company knocked it down. The guy from the phone company said that he could have tried to push it over for us, but he was afraid it might fall on our fence and damage that. So...since it's sitting on phone lines and since it might take out our fence if it's taken down the wrong way, my husband and I decided that it would probably be better to have some professionals come out and take it down.

Are those aphids on the tomatoes? (little white things clustered near flower buds and young leaves)

I'm not sure. I sprinkle Shake Away out there occasionally, so it could just be that. I'll check out there later and make sure they're not aphids.

So...I have aphids. What do I do to get rid of them?

mix an ounce of murphy's oil soap in with a gallon of water and spray, focusing on buds, flowers and young leaves. Make sure to get all sides. You will likely lose a few flowers, but no worries, the aphids should be worse off =)
