This weekend has been just a whirl of activity. On Friday night, [livejournal.com profile] doomsey and I went to James and Carrie's wedding. I'm sure [livejournal.com profile] doomsey had a good time talking with friends, but I had a blast. There may have been a bit too much alcohol consumed and a lot of dancing.

More on the wedding and on Pagan Pride )

As soon as we got home, I got a call from my parents. My sister was in the hospital because she was having chest pains and tingling in her left arm. By the time the news got to me, they had managed to rule out both a heart attack and a blood clot. They kept her overnight for observation and to run more tests. This morning, I called my parents back to see if there had been any more developments and found out that she had been released from the hospital. The doctors believe that she had an anxiety attack of sorts (and she has been under a lot of stress lately). The doctors did order an echocardiogram, but I guess she's not going to get the results from that until tomorrow. I hope she follows up with her doctor and/or a cardiologist to make sure that it's just anxiety and not anything more worrying.

My sister apparently told my parents that she felt "foolish" over going to the hospital and finding out it was nothing, but honestly, it's better to get things checked out and have it turn out to be nothing than to have something wrong and not get it treated. When I woke up after having my embolism, I tried to tell [livejournal.com profile] doomsey not to call the hospital and that we should wait a bit to see if the problem clears up. Yeah, I would have been in deep doo-doo if I had done that because I had another episode of sorts while I was in the ambulance and almost blacked out again. I think the only reasons I didn't faint again is because I was on oxygen and the paramedic told me how to breathe to avoid passing out. So...I plan to call up my sister plan to call up my sister later this afternoon and reassure her that she did do the right thing considering the fact that she has two little ones to look after.

To end things on a less pessimistic note...LINK DUMP!!!

Except for having a busy day on Saturday, not much has been going on with me. On Saturday evening, I went to a lovely Lammas / New Moon ritual. After that was over, I dropped by a friend's house for the tail end of their Casino Royale party. They only not so good thing that happened to me that evening was that I got bit by mosquitoes at both events. Many many mosquitoes. I must have at the very least ten mosquito bites on me. Not cool, not cool at all.

Oh...I was a bad [livejournal.com profile] nekosensei yesterday and didn't go for my walk. It was too humid outside and I didn't feel up to being both itchy and sweaty. Yeah...I know...no excuse. No cookies for me. :)

That's it with me. Time for some links:

- A Turkish man accused of beating his wife is now claiming that he was dancing the kolbasti and that a passer-by mistook it for domestic violence. I tried to be open-minded, but after looking a few videos of people dancing the kolbasti on YouTube, I decided that I just had to call bullshit on this one. How can you possibly confuse wife beating with this dance? Yeah...I'm just not seeing it. What do you guys think?

It looks like a cool dance, by the way. Anybody want to teach me? :)

It's been a while since I've done one of these posts....

Previous books )

8. Complete Idiot's Guide to Wicca and Witchcraft by Denise Zimmerman -- Hey! I had to get started somewhere, right? I think this book was a good overview and it gave some useful information, but there was also a bit of fluff mixed in. *cough cough* Crystals. *cough*

9. Wild Child by T.C. Boyle -- I picked this one up at the library thinking it was a novel about the wild boy of Aveyron, a feral child who was reputed to have been raised by wolves. Once I got the book home, I discovered that it was a collection of short stories. "The Lie" and "Sin Dolor" were enjoyable yet disturbing. I also liked "Wild Child" because I thought it was a good portrayal of what happens to children when they're exposed to languages too late.

10. Drawing Down the Moon by Margot Adler -- I'm surprised that I managed to find this at my local library. I've had to request many of these books through inter-library loan. Anyhow, what I liked about this book was that the opening chapters did a good job describing the history and evolution of both Wicca and other Neo-Pagan movements. (Also, I had no idea that there was a link between sci-fi and paganism, but it kind of makes sense now that I think about it. And at the time the book was published, there were three well-known sci-fi authors who were also pagan. One Adler named because she was "out" but she didn't want to out the other two).

10. The Spiral Dance by Starhawk -- [livejournal.com profile] fuzzyscribble recommended that I read this book when I expressed an interest in Paganism. Good choice. I got it from the library using inter-library loan (I've been doing that for a ton of books lately). After reading it, I decided that this would be a nice book to own since I wanted to try some of the exercises in it so I purchased both this and and Scott Cunningham's Guide for the Solitary Practitioner from Amazon.

11. From Dead to Worse by Charlaine Harris -- This is the eighth book in the Sookie Stackhouse series. Honestly, I was kind of luke-warm on this book. The plot seemed all over the place to me and I got the impression that she was setting things up for the next book in the series, Dead and Gone. Oh...and while I'm on the topic, I bought Dead and Gone in paperback while I was shopping yesterday. I plan to read it on the plane to and from San Francisco.
