May. 21st, 2010 07:07 pm* Yay! Finals are over! I have a little bit of grading to do, but it shouldn't be too bad.
* This afternoon, I took advantage of the break in the rain to walk to the library-- about a three-and-a-half mile trip in all-- to drop off some books and check out Mists of Avalon and The Gravedigger's Daughter. I also got Precursor (a book in C.J. Cherryh's Foreigner series) for
doomsey and a book of folk shawls. The latter book has many good patterns, but I'm particularly enamored of the Irish shawl. Must buy yarn and make!
* After catching two neighborhood children attempting to climb the big maple tree in my front yard, I poked my head up and told them told them to get down from there before they fell down and got hurt. I'm not turning into one of those old fogies telling kids to keep off their lawn, am I?
* Google is awesome! Did you guys know that you could play Pac-Man on their webpage today? Yeah...I might have spent a little too much time playing around with that today. (makes an innocent-looking face)
Yay! Links!
* These are pictures of an abandoned medieval stone city in rural Spain. *drool* Now I want to go visit it. I've been meaning to drag
doomsey to central and southern Spain for years now.... (Link courtesy of
ginmar)
* This next one is for the Doctor Who fans and knitting geeks on my friends list. Knit Picks has a sock yarn that goes by the name "Time Traveler." Go read the description! Now I'm half tempted to get both the "Time Traveler" and the "Abracadabra" yarns. (Swiped from a Doctor Who knitting community)

May. 20th, 2010 02:19 pm* Last night, I dreamed that a friend of mine told me that she was a conservative. Then, she told me that she was going to a Sarah Palin rally and asked me if I wanted to come with. Bwuh?
* The night before that, I woke up from a dream, and I remembered thinking, "hey...this dream would make for a nice story idea." Did I write the dream down in the notebook I tucked under my bed for precisely that purpose as soon as I got up? No. Do I remember what I dreamed about? No. I guess that'll show me....
* It's going up to 85 degrees on Sunday! *squee* I love warm, summer weather!
* Somebody thought it would be cute to declare May 20th "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day" to protest Comedy Central's decision to censor the South Park episode that showed the prophet Mohammed in a teddy bear suit. It had so much potential for fail, and that's exactly what happened. I wandered over to the Facebook page this morning and looked at some of the photos posted there. I would say that a good 99.9% of the material is as bigoted as all get up. Yeah...being a bigot makes you guys look so "edgy."
I'm all for freedom of speech, but can we use some common sense here? (Link courtesy of

* This meme is funny. Post a comment with your user handle, and a fictional character will write you a little love note.

* Other than that, not much has been going on with me. I've been busy with work, school work, exercise, and other outside stuff. I've been reading LJ sporadically, so if you think there's something I missed, sorry! Let me know in a comment.

Apr. 29th, 2010 12:55 amHey! Been busy playing catch-up both with work and with the class I'm taking, so I haven't been able to do a lot of reading...or posting for that matter. Have some links:

* Can a Plant Be Altruistic? -- Interesting article about plants. Also from

* Somebody knitted this gem. And I thought *I* was being nerdy when I knit my Doctor Who scarf! (Via

* Ugh! Now why is my stomach all pissed off? Oh well...I suppose I should try going to sleep.

Mar. 14th, 2010 12:34 am* This is pretty much what my day looked like yesterday: work, work, and more work, mad dentist appointment dash, clean up the house because my family is coming over for dinner next week, work, go to dinner at my in-laws' house, play with the Karaoke machine and surf the web until I fall over.
* I was due to have X-rays taken during this latest dentist app-- which they did-- and no cavities or any other problems turned up. Yay! Clean bill of health. On the other hand, the oral hygienist did point out that teeth with crowns on them are more prone to problems with the roots and surrounding tissues; some of the sensitivity I've been having could be the beginning stages of that. If that's the case, then I *might* need a root canal somewhere down the line. Anybody ever have a root canal? How expensive are they? Are they painful? (Yep...I'm a wuss when it comes to pain).
* My cats act strangely every time I pull out the Karaoke machine. They start out by hovering. Then, Cosette trills, pokes at me, and in general, tries to get my attention. Arwen bites my leg before harassing Cosette, who has been busy harassing me. They never used to do this before my pulmonary embolism when I had to give up singing for awhile. So why are they doing this now? Do they think I'm sick or in pain?
* Today, I have to work, set up a character for a LARP (Live Action Role Playing Game), and study for German class.
* Wow...somebody really wants that poor Swedish cartoonist dead. Isn't that the second woman that's been arrested?
I guess it's not really appropriate to tell Kill Bill jokes here, is it?
* Yay!
doomsey is home from downstate!
* Just finished an outline for my character for the LARP. Reading through the documentation and coming up with a rough sketch took me much longer than what I expected. And I'm still going to have to go to the character building session to get some help with choosing useful skills, advantages, and disadvantages. So far, my character is a snooty half-elf with a penchant for fire sorcery. And some of the backstory I came up with should be amusing. This is going to be so much fun...I can't wait until we start playing.
* Never did get to studying some more for German. Oh well...there's always tomorrow.
* Cute car. Now, my question is, what happened to the Volt? Is GM still going to be able to make it?

Today's Updates
Feb. 7th, 2010 04:17 pm*headdesk headdesk headdesk*
* I heard rumors that Neil Gaiman was going to write a Doctor Who episode, but after not hearing about it for awhile, I thought it was only that, rumors. Then, today, I read this story". YES!!!! This is going to be AWESOME!!!
* Since I'm going to go to a Superbowl Party today, I have to come up with a team to root for. I'm kind of partial to New Orleans-- been meaning to go there for years-- so I'm going to go with the Saints.
* Got tons of stuff accomplished today. Should probably work on studying a bit more for German class before heading out to watch the game.
* I have one more color to add to my afghan and it's D-O-N-E...done!

Hawks and Sore Pinkie Blues
Mar. 2nd, 2009 11:00 pmBecause I had been sick last week, I had a lot that needed to get accomplished today: tons of laundry, grocery shopping, and a bunch of stuff for work. Well, I did okay on getting that all accomplished. And then, I managed to slam the tip of my pinkie in my car door right before I had to unload groceries. Words can not express how painful that was. I think I spent a minute or two with my head up against the back of my car getting my happy thoughts back. I still can't use the finger all that well. For one, I think I lost feeling in it. (I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. If I've lost feeling in it, that means that it can't hurt, right?)
doomsey seems to think that I might have pissed off a nerve. I hope it gets better soon. In the meantime, writing, typing, and knitting is going to be a bit awkward.
And this one is for all the bird people on my friends list. It seems that we have a hawk living in our backyard. This is the second time I've seen him in a week. This was the same guy that I missed taking a picture of last week because I was still figuring out how
doomsey's camera worked. Anyhow, this time, he let me take a ton of pictures of him. I got a couple of really good ones, one of which I'm going to use for my picture of the day project. It was kind of amusing actually. I always thought hawks were shy, and would take off as soon as they saw you. This guy hung around and watched me take pictures of him. It looked like he was just as interested in me as I was in him. Maybe he had been in captivity for awhile and thought I was going to give him a handout? :)
( Click here for picture )
So...what kind of hawk is he? Red-tailed hawk or Cooper's Hawk? I could never really tell the difference. Also, because I'm seeing him around a lot, do you suppose he's building a nest in my backyard? This would be a good thing because that means that he'll keep the squirrel population down. Too bad he wasn't hanging around last year when we had a family of squirrels living in our attic. We really could have used him them. I'd much rather have a hawk around then rats with tails who cost us money when we have to hire someone to extract them from our attic. (We could have done this ourselves, but
doomsey didn't want to go climbing around on our roof to fix it, and I couldn't because I was still on the blood thinners).

This weekend has been pretty busy. On Friday, I had physical therapy and afterwards I had to take the cat to the vet. I also picked up some much needed file cabinets from a freecycler and shopped for office supplies. We had invited
judygs,
bmtstandard, and
emygination over for dinner, so
doomsey and I stopped at Chow to Go and picked up a bunch of food. The neighbor's son was doing a fundraiser for his school, so we bought pie from him and it was delivered this week. We didn't realize, however, that it needed to be baked since both
doomsey and I have been so busy lately. So...after dinner...we put the pie in the oven and then went downstairs to watch Ratatouille.
Yesterday,
doomsey and I went to the hardware store and then grocery shopping. That evening, we went with his family, J, and A. to see The Cook at the Goodman Theater. That was one damn good play. We had planned to go to a Moroccan place for dinner last night (the name of the place escapes me at the moment), but when we pulled up, we discovered that they were closed. We tried another place, but they were closed too. We ended up at Sabri Nahari, a Pakistani place, instead. As always, the food there was excellent.
I didn't do anything interesting today because I've been working like mad. We're approaching the end of the semester where things get busy busy.
Yesterday,
I didn't do anything interesting today because I've been working like mad. We're approaching the end of the semester where things get busy busy.
So this is what my weekend looked like.
Friday during the day: I had a migraine. I took a lot of drugs so that I could deal with said migraine without ripping my brains out.
Friday night: I picked L. up at the train station. I ended up playing hell finding parking near the station since it was Elm Fest. When we got to my place, I gave her the tour of the new house. She thought it a beautiful house, and she said her mother in particular would have loved a house like this. Then, my sister came over and we went out to dinner at Sushi Nest, which is in downtown Elmhurst. Again, I had a hell of a time finding parking. I think I circled through the parking garage about two times before I found anything. Dinner was awesome and the company was great. We went to my house for awhile where we talked and I showed J. Swedish chef videos on YouTube. I think my personal favorites are the Chocolate Moose sketch followed by the donut one. Heh heh...YouTube is great for wasting time. Since L had to get up early tomorrow, J went home and I gave L a ride back to her apartment.
Saturday: I had another migraine. I had work to do so I worked anyway. It sucked because I felt like I was going to throw up.
doomsey wasn't at home since he took
emygination car shopping. He threatened to kick my butt when he got home if I hadn't taken anything for the migraine by then. Since I had to take drugs on Friday and another day this past week, I was reticent to take more. I decided to take some more Excedrin so
doomsey wouldn't kick my ass.
Saturday night: When
doomsey got home, I had a Trader Joe's satay for dinner. Then,
doomsey and I watched an anime movie called Paprika. It was a very bizarre movie. I would have to say that I would have to rank it right up there with the anime, Lain, as a complete and utter mindfuck.
Sunday: I didn't get a migraine. Yay for me! I went over to the cemetary about two blocks away from my house to trim the grass and weeds away from my grandparents' and other relatives' headstones. I looked at the dates again and realized that both my grandparents and my aunt were relatively young when they died. I think my grandfather was in his sixties (I didn't pay too much attention to that one), my grandmother was seventy-three, and my aunt was sixty-nine. I tell you...I have some really sucky genes in my family compared with
doomsey's. Most of his grandparents lived to be more than eighty years old.
When we were kids, this cemetary used to allow people to bring live plants and put them out. They used to have water hoses where you could draw water for them. They have since taken them out, and it looks like people set out artificial flowers now. That is so hokey.
When I got home, I did some more weeding outside. It looks like I'm going to have to attack the way back again in the next week or so.
For dinner,
doomsey and I went to Elmfest. I got a pulled pork sandwich from Sweet Baby Ray's as well as a strawberry-bannana smoothie (very delicious!) and
doomsey got some random Thai food and a lime-bannana smoothie. Personally, I liked my smoothie better. While we ate, we listened to a group that was impersonating the Beatles. The music was quite good actually. Then, we walked back home. I must say that, as you get closer to the downtown area, the cicadas get loud. I was tempted to cover my ears when we passed by a couple of trees because they literally sounded like they were screaming. That...and I swear to God that the sound cycles. They get loud. Then they get soft. Then they crescendo again. Bizarre.
I've noticed that the cicada noises have been moving steadily northward. I've also been hearing a few more cicadas in my neighborhood, but so far we're not completely inundated with them. I hope it stays that way because the areas that are completely infested with them smell very bad. Somebody told me that it's because they release a pheromone. I'm not going to be amused if I have to spend this entire summer feeling like I'm going to narf because of some stinky bugs. I also told
doomsey that, if it gets as loud as some of the places we walked through, I'm going to close up the house and turn on the air conditioner. Gah!
Tonight, I think I might go grocery shopping. I'm kind of tired from the walk that we had, so I might sit on my butt for a few more minutes...
