Busy day today. And I couldn't have picked a better day to do outside work. It's gorgeous outside!

* Irish cheddar cheese acquired!

* This afternoon, I cleaned some of the first floor windows both inside and out. The ones that got done the best were the living room ones as they were easier to reach. The dining room and kitchen ones got the insides washed, but not much of the outsides because I couldn't reach them as well and I was terrified to going too high up on the ladder. I have a tendency to klutz out and fall off.

* I also washed my car, which was *covered* in salt. While I was working, I got buzzed by a yellow jacket. Yep...it must be spring if those little fuckers those guys are back. I'm probably going to have a hard time with them again this year. Next time I get dive bombed, I'm going to have to watch and see where they disappear to. Then, I can go out and nuke the shit out of their nest spray the nest with wasp killer after sunset.

* Yay! My car is clean!

* Last summer and fall, we had trouble with our rosebush. We had a fungus that left little black spots on the leaves attack it. We had this same problem the year before. The culprit is most likely the wet summers we've been having lately. Last year, [livejournal.com profile] forestdruid told us to remove all the old leaves and clear away any fallen leaves from around the base of the rosebush. Between that and spraying, that should help keep the rosebush from getting reinfected. Well, today I removed all the old leaves and raked around the base. I couldn't reach some of the leaves at the center of the rosebush. I used a shovel and a stick to poke at them and get out what I could. I still got a couple of nasty scratches from my efforts even with gardening gloves on. Later this spring, I'm going to spray more fungicide. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we can get rid of it for good this time.

* And while I'm on the topic of pests, our pine trees have some kind of borer in back. I think this year [livejournal.com profile] doomsey and I are going to call an arborist to have a look at them and some of our other trees. We're due for that soon.

* Trulawn came by again. They said that we have snow mold on part of the lawn, which requires raking. Too tired to do it today. And it's also not a good idea because they put granules down this afternoon. Maybe sometime next week if the weather is decent.

* I wore a better brace on my ankle, so it's not hurting as badly as yesterday. The only problem is that this one is cutting into my heel. *sigh*

* Oh...I also cleaned my fish tank earlier. The algae is taking over! Maybe I need to invest in another snail to replace the old one that died...

* One of my ankles has been pissed off for the past few days, and I have no idea what I did to it. I'm going to try taking some ibuprofen and see if the pain goes away on its own. If it doesn't, I'll probably call my doctor sometime next week and see what she recommends. It sucks because I was hoping to go for a couple of walks this week (provided it's not raining) and listen to my audiobook. Now I'm thinking that maybe that isn't such a good idea. I don't want to risk making it worse.

* Ex-Toyota lawyer says documents prove company hid damaging information -- Why am I not surprised?

* And in related news, there was yet another incidence of a Prius accelerating uncontrollably this week. As a Prius owner, I have to say that this is starting to make me a little nervous. I wasn't too worried about it because I've always been told that if a car starts accelerating uncontrollably, that you should put the car in neutral and hit the brakes. Okay...that's not too hard, right? But now I'm hearing rumors that putting it in neutral doesn't always work because the Prius's neutral isn't "a true neutral." Yeesh. Don't get me wrong, I love my Prius and I think it's a fun car to drive, but now I'm starting to think that the designers were pretty stupid for not putting a big red button in the car that tells the car to shut down completely if the computer goes all wonky.

* Mississippi school sued for canceling prom over lesbian student -- Yes...sue their asses!

* Animal Suicide Sheds Light on Human Behavior -- This link showed up in my Twitter feed. Very timely. Also, if you haven't read [livejournal.com profile] naamah_darling's post about depression and suicide yet, do it now.

* Brooklyn Dem Felix Ortiz Wants to Ban Use of Salt in New York Restaurants -- Umm....okay. *boggles* (Via [livejournal.com profile] tx_cronopio)

* Pope 'led cover-up of child abuse by priests' -- Fucking figures. And now I'm idly wondering whether a pope can be excommunicated.... (Link swiped from [livejournal.com profile] hakeber)

Blergh. I have been sick since about Thursday, and I really haven't been feeling the greatest these past few days. Yesterday was the costume party at [livejournal.com profile] voidness' house. I got dressed as a vampire and went over there for a couple of hours. (Monster make-up is confusing! Next time, I'm going to use clown make-up and improvise). I didn't feel up to staying much longer. There were a lot of people there, it was loud, my voice was going...going...gone, it hurt to talk, and I didn't feel like shouting over people to be heard. I was also having a hard time breathing. So, I had [livejournal.com profile] doomsey take me home a little after nine o'clock. I told [livejournal.com profile] doomsey to go back to the party since he seemed to be having fun. I watched tv, knitted, and ended up coughing so much that I gave myself a nasty headache. Ouch!

Today, I didn't do much of anything. I sat on the couch and vegged out with the computer. Gosh, I didn't even shower or get dressed until six in the evening. That never happens. I hope I feel better by Tuesday.

Oh...as I told [livejournal.com profile] doomsey during dinner, I've also been a woman of few words because my voice is pretty much shot. Why do I keep losing my voice every time I get sick?

And now I leave you with a link and a meme.

This link is swiped from [livejournal.com profile] brightflashes. A group of people conducted an experiment in which they sent unlikely objects through the US Postal Service to see what would get delivered and what wouldn't.

The meme is from [livejournal.com profile] tx_cronopio:
If you could have seven homes like some unmentioned recent political candidate, where would you have them? For simplicity, let's limit this to the country in which you currently reside (Aww...that's no fun! I would love to live overseas so I'm including some non-US locations as well). So for me, that'd be the US. Obviously, we're pretending that money is no object.

- Chicago, IL
- San Francisco, CA
- Somewhere in the mountains outside Boulder or Golden, CO
- Tokyo, Japan
- Granada, Spain
- London, England
- Enh...I don't know. Someplace warm. Let's say Hawaii. It's warm year round and they don't get hurricanes.

So...does this mean I get to pick eleven cars now too?

Let's see. I can only come up with two: a Toyota Prius (wait...I already have that!) and a Tesla Roadster (Oooh! Shiny!)

Okay...I lied. I have one more link courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] ginmar. Obama is talking about reversing 200 of Bush's administrative actions and executive orders once he assumes office in January. It's about time that we start seeing some sanity in the White House!

Several days ago, I was a few houses away from my driveway when I saw a police car with his lights on turn onto my block ahead of me. He was heading right towards me. I remembered that I had been listening to a really good song when I was driving on [name redacted] Street, and I wondered if I had been speeding inadvertently. Then, I looked in my review mirror and saw another police car turn onto my street behind me. I thought, "gee...that's a lot of police cars for a speeding ticket. What did I do? Run someone over and not notice?" It turns out that they weren't pulling me over at all. Our neighbors in one of the houses across the street from us had smelled smoke in their basement and called the fire department. I just so happened to be pulling onto my street the minute the police showed up. The fire department made an appearance about a half a minute later.

Whew! No tickie for me!

Oh...and our neighbor's house is fine. It turns out that it was a false alarm.

I probably did this as a kid with my cabbage patch dolls when I was a kid, but I don't remember their names anymore. It was so long ago.

I don't really befriend and name inanimate objects per se, but I do have a couple of things that I am very partial to. They are:

1) My laptop because I'm on it all the time and would feel lost without it. (Actually, I take that back. It does have a name. I've always thought of my laptop as being named Pearl after my husband's grandmother. It's white like a pearl and my husband bought it for me not long after his grandmother died. It seemed like the right thing to name it at the time. She was a sweet, intelligent lady and she was more of a grandmother to me because I was never really close to my own. My maternal grandmother went crazy after taking valium for years. Because she was violent, we were never allowed to see her. I don't know what was up with my paternal grandmother, but she was mean to my sister and I. I think it was because she didn't like girls. She was nice to my brother, though, and spoiled him every chance she got). My husband nicknamed the laptop I had before this one "Brick" because it was heavy, ran slowly, and had a tendency to overheat.

2) My little red Prius. I'm really happy to be getting 45 to 50 miles per gallon now that gas is almost four dollars a gallon.

3) My ipod. I do a lot of walking, which is very good for me and is something I need to do right now. I don't think I would be able to motivate myself to go out there and walk every day if I didn't have something to entertain me while I was doing it. Yesterday, I checked out two audio books from the library, and I'm going to try to load them onto my ipod and listen to them while I walk. I'm really happy about this because I haven't been reading as much as I used to because of some issues with my neck. This seems to be an adequate solution. I can't spend that much time reading, but I can listen. So...expect more "Books I have read/listened to so far this year" posts in the future.

4) My house. It's cozy and I like the neighborhood. I'm also closer to both family and friends here. And I now have a garden!

I *finally* picked up my little, red Prius yesterday. They managed to finish putting on the bumper right before closing time. Yay! That made it possible for me to run errands today.

I also managed to do quite a bit of walking yesterday. [livejournal.com profile] doomsey and I managed to make it to and around the park in the evening. That's quite a bit more walking then what I've usually done. One of these days, I hope to eventually go back to walking one to three miles a day.

For whatever reason, I'm still worried about having my CT scan re-done in April. Sometimes I wish we could just do it so I could just stop worrying already.

This week I had a bit of a scare. I had some swelling on my thigh, and I didn't know what it was. I didn't think it was a clot because the circumference of my leg didn't increase and it wasn't red, but it was still a bit disconcerting nonetheless. I went to the doctor on Wednesday, instead of Friday, which I already had an appointment for, so that she could take a look at it. It turns out that the part of my leg that swelled didn't have any veins in it. My doctor said that it was a problem with my sciatic nerve, which runs from the back all the way down the legs. She said that, sometimes, changes in weather can piss off the muscles so that they aggravate that nerve. She said that sometimes it can hurt like hell, but not always. Fortunately for me, it doesn't hurt very much. The treatment is usually ibruprofen to reduce swelling, but since I can't take it, I'm going to have to make do with exercise (aka swinging the leg back and forth) and a heating pad. Last night, I was afraid that the rear-end collision I got into was going to piss off my neck and back, but so far that hasn't happened. Hmmm...it looks like I got off lucky on that one.

My doctor also tested my INR, and it was low, so it looks like it's more rat poison Coumadin for me over the next ten days. I also have to go back in ten days and have my blood tested again too.

Today, I got in contact with my insurance agent, and filled out the rest of the police report. When I told him who the other guy's insurance policy is from, I could hear him cringe on the other side of the line. He told me that said company is pretty crappy, and they jerk everybody around so that they don't have to pay out on claims. I looked up some of the complaints online, and a common theme seems to be leaving people on hold, not answering the phone, and disconnecting on them and not bothering to call them back. I'm glad that my insurance company is the one who has to deal with them and not me. I just don't have the patience to play those kind of games right now. We do have to pay the auto body shop a $250 deductible, but we will get that back once the other guy's insurance ponies up. I have a feeling that we're not going to see that $250 for a long time.

Last night and today, I was kind of depressed. I was in good spirits on Thursday, and it really did feel like things were going to be okay. My classes were going well and my health has slowly begun to improve. Then, I got a cold dose of reality when idiot driver rear-ended me. After the initial fright of the crash had passed, my heart sunk. I was driving the new Prius, and I love that car. I've only had it a couple of months and already it's been in an accident. And it was something stupid that I had absolutely no control over. I seem to be having a rather impressive streak of bad luck. This might sound irrational, but I can't help thinking that, if this is the kind of luck I'm going to have at the start of the year, how bad are things going to be by the end of it? Am I going to live to see 2009? I don't know, it just seems like things are spinning out of control right now, and there's nothing I can do to stop it. I'm also still a bit nervous about the CT scan that they're going to do in April to see if that mass in my chest area is growing. The way my luck is going... Yeah...I'm not going to finish that thought...

And it my case, it really pours.

You know my nice, red Prius that I got last fall? The one I love so dearly? Well, I was driving it home from work this evening and got rear-ended by some jackass who was too busy talking on the phone to pay attention to what was going on in front of him. Fortunately, it doesn't look like it took a lot of damage. I was stopping for a red light (but wasn't completely stopped) when it had happened. His front end looks pretty bad though. He lost some of his lights and his hood looked like it was bent a bit. I'm guessing that the Prius is probably going to need a new rear bumper though.

Yeah...I really needed this. I needed this like I needed a frigging hole in my head.

[Edit: There's other stuff that has happened this week, but I probably won't post it until I have the patience and energy to deal with it].

Yesterday, I took [livejournal.com profile] doomsey's Prius to have its emissions tested. The guy doing the test commented that he was amazed that he could put his foot down all the way on the gas, and that the car wouldn't make any noise. Apparently, the car had decided at that point that it wanted to run on battery power. I still like seeing people's reaction to the Prius when it does something that's out of the norm for them. I'm pretty much used to it since [livejournal.com profile] doomsey and I have owned one for a long time now. On the way out, I added that they were great cars and that they were fun to drive.

This week, I started going for my walks again. I used to walk two to three-and-a-half miles a day, but I stopped doing that when I messed up my hamstring and later my neck. I am told that walking will help with my back (which is probably what's causing the problems with my hamstring and neck). On Sunday I did two miles and I did three miles on Monday. My neck and shoulders were very sore after walking three miles, so yesterday I went back down to two. I think I'm going to slowly try building up from there.

I also managed to get a paper cut under my nail yesterday. Damn...that hurt. And it bled a lot too. That was wonderful. I just had to get a bad cut where a Band-aid won't do any good. Fortunately, I had some Kleenex handy so I shoved a piece of it under my nail and stopped the bleeding with that. Oh...and it's still sore. *grumbles*

Today definitely qualified as a bad day. Things were going well until I was just about ready to leave for work. I walked upstairs and noticed that [livejournal.com profile] cosettemonster was limping again. And, yet again, she was favoring the back paw that has a chipped bone in it. This morning she was walking around normally (she started getting better a few days after she first injured it), but now she looks like she's back at square one. She must have strained it again jumping up on something. I asked [livejournal.com profile] doomsey to check on her and give the cats some food before he went to anime night, and he noticed that she was hiding behind the couch. He said that he had to poke her to get her out so she could have some food. Hiding is not a good sign. It means that she's not feeling well. Tonight, when I got home, she came out from behind the sofa to greet me (because I'm her mommie). I gave her her pill (aren't I nice?) and then gave her a little bit of food since she's supposed to eat with the medication. I talked to [livejournal.com profile] emygination this evening, and she said that I should leave a message with the vet and see whether she wants us to wait a few days to see if she gets better or to bring her in again. I really worried that she's going to have to have surgery. I'm going to be a basket case if it's determined that that's what she needs.

The day goes downhill from there. I ended up leaving later than what I wanted for work because I wanted to make sure things were okay with [livejournal.com profile] cosettemonster before I left. As I said, I noticed she was having problems right before I was supposed to go. Next, I'm on the expressway and some idiot leaves a large plastic bag fall out of their car or truck. It drifted into my lane, but I couldn't avoid it since there were cars on either side of me. I thought it was going to end up stuck under my car and that my car would smell like burnt plastic for the next couple of weeks (that happened to me several years ago). What happened was that the stupid bag ended up wound around my side mirror so that I couldn't see out of the goddamn thing to change lanes. I tried to open up the window to remove it while I was on the expressway, but the damn bag started flapping in the window, and I was afraid it was going to start flapping in my face and obscure my vision if I opened the thing any more. That was even more dangerous so I closed the window and put up with the goddamn bag until I got off the expressway (I'll tell you...other cars were leaving me a lot of room!). Then, I stopped and took the damn bag off. I still have it in my car if you want a souvenir! Actually...scratch that...I think I'm going to light a fire and burn it.

And...
